Aims :

 

The students will be able to design a channel coding system, of the type used in digital television, in wireless connections, or in optical fiber links. The main construction parameters of such systems are reviewed.

 

Topics :

 

Digital communications. Shannon theorem for discrete channels. Shannon theorem for continuous channels. Block codes. Generator matrix and parity check matrix. Generator polynomial. Bandwidth expansion. Coding gain. Hamming bounds. Singleton bounds. Hamming codes. Parity check codes. Standard array decoding. Computation of the residual Bit Error Ratio. Convolutional codes. State diagram. Trellis. Viterbi decoding algorithm. Evaluation of the asymptotic coding gain. Decoding complexity. Hard decision decoding and soft decision decoding. Cryptography. Gaussian channels and not Gaussian channels.
