Aims :
The
primary objectives of the course are to provide
advanced understanding on structural analysis
and design in the field of steel structures and
footbridges. The course will be delivered by means
of lectures.
Topics :
Advanced design of structural members:
non-uniform torsion, buckling of members with
shear deformability, lateral torsional buckling
of beams, local buckling phenomena of steel profiles.
Steel structures in seismic areas: structural
types (moment resisting frames, structural systems
with concentrically and eccentrically braces);
local and global ductility design according to
the current codes.
Mitigation strategies of seismic actions: analysis
of the behaviour of base-isolated systems and
structural systems equipped with dissipation devices
(viscous, elasto-plastic and rubber devices),
design methods of devices.
Footbridges: structural typologies; analysis of
the dynamic behaviour under human loads and mitigation
vibration systems at the serviceability state.
Textbooks :

Exam :
The assessment criteria of this
course relies on the outcomes of an oral exam
which mainly focuses on the evaluation of the
student understanding of the theoretical and design
aspects.
Tutorial Session :
The lecturer is available on Monday
from 12.00 to 14.00 a.m. in his office at the
Department of Architecture, Construction and Structures
– Area Structures.
