Aims :

 

The course is devoted to give elements in the theory of electric signals, as a fundamental basis forr Telecommunications Engineers, but also for Electronic and Information Engineers. Fourier Transform, its properties, analog-to-digital conversion, probability theory, information theory, random variables and stochastic processes are introduced. The main noise affecting electric signals are described.

Analog and digital signals. Deterministic and random signals. Probability theory. Random variables. Statistically independent events. Mutually exclusive events. Binomial, Gaussian and Poisson variables. Bayes theorem. Stochastic processes. Stationarity and ergodicity. Power spectrum. Sampling theorem. Finite energy signals. Cross correlation. Nergy spectrum. Parseval theorem. Periodic signals. Fourier series. Fourier transform. Convolution. Linear systems. Non distortion in linear systems. Thermal noise. Inter-modulation noise. Quantisation noise. Properties of Fourier series and transform. Reliability and failures of an infrastructure. Mean Time between Fealures and Mean Time to Repair.
