Aims :
The
educational aim of the course is to supply basic
knowledge of structure and properties of different
classes of materials, traditional and innovative,
directed to their optimal utilization in within
mechanical engineering field.

Different classes of materials.
An outline of matter structure. Chemical bonds.
Crystal lattices. Defects of crystals.
Tensile curves. Material toughness, ductile and
fragile fracture, Fatigue. Hardness.
Metals: metallic alloy. Phase transition. Phase
diagrams. Steels. Iron-carbon phase diagram. TTT
and CCC curves.
Polymers structure. Glass transition: transition
temperature. Mechanical properties. Main plastic
materials: thermoplastic, thermosetting polymers
and elastomers.
Composite materials: mechanical properties. Fibers
and particles. Composite materials with polymeric,
metallic and ceramic matrices.
Traditional ceramic materials: production. An
outline of new ceramics. Porous structure. Concrete.
