Aims :
The
primary objectives of the course are to provide
fundamental understanding of the behaviour and
design of steel structural elements and connections.
The course will be delivered by means of lectures
and tutorials.
Topics :
Design principles: idealization
of the structural system: geometry, discretisation,
support and loading conditions; methods of allowable
stress design and limit state design.
Loads on structure: load conditions (dead and
live loads, wind and snow loads, thermal loadings)
and their variability; load combinations for the
strength and serviceability limit states.
Structural steel: designation, material properties,
cross-sectional shapes of hot-rolled and cold-formed
sections, standard tests for the characterisation
of the material mechanical properties.
Design of structural steel members: allowable
stress and design stress; design of members subjected
to axial compression or tension, moment and shear
force according to Italian code and European code;
design at service conditions.
Structural stability: buckling of columns subjected
to axial loads, uniaxial bending and combined
actions according to Italian code and European
code; introduction to other kinds of buckling
phenomena.
Bolt and weld groups: bolt group behaviour and
design, weld group behaviour and design.
Bolted and welded connections: design of spliced
connections and plate cleats.

Exam :
The assessment criteria of this course relies
on the outcomes of an oral exam which mainly focuses
on the evaluation of the student understanding
of the theoretical aspects of the behaviour and
design of steel structural elements and on the
ability of the students to solve a short written
question dealing with a simple practical design
problem.
Tutorial Session :
The lecturer is available on Wednesday from 11.30
to 13.30 a.m. in his office at the Department
of Architecture, Construction and Structures –
Area Structures.
