Aims :
The
aim of the course is to give students a basic
knowledge on mechanical performances and durability
of concrete and ordinary steel, related to type
of structure and environment.
Topics :
Fundamental Properties of
Engineering materials
A
-Concrete: -requirements and features of Portland
cement and blended cements; natural aggregates:
characteristics and qualification, size and grading;
chemical admixtures: retarding, accelerating,
water reducing, air-entraining and curing admixtures.
-Concrete at early ages: workability; compacting
factor; segregation and bleeding; plastic shrinkage.
-Hardened concrete: curing conditions; strength;
drying shrinkage and creep; thermal stresses.
-Durability: classification of causes and EU normatives.
-Mix design: specification based on strength.
B
-Steels: ordinary steel, structural steel,
welding steel. Stainless steel. UNI specification.
-Structure (Fe-C diag.; thermal treatment, production
processes); mechanical properties.
-Metals and environmental: brief introduction
on corrosion thermodynamic and kinetics; corrosion
of reinforcement bars; atmospheric and underground
corrosion of steel construction
