Aims :
The
course is aimed at providing the student with
a comprehensive overview on the available laboratory
and in-situ geotechnical investigation methods.
Special emphasis is to given to crucial aspects
of the planning of geotechnical investigations
and monitoring and to the interpretation of test
results.
Topics :
Regulation. Regulations on geotechnical
design in Italy. DM LLPP 11 Marzo 1988. Design
in seismic zones. AGI’s Recommendations.
Eurocode 7 and 8.
Laboratory testing. Soil classification. Index
properties. Grain size analyses. Consistency limits.
The USCS system. Soil compressibility. Oedometer
tests (IL, CRL, CRS). Shear Strength. Triaxial
tests (conventional, stress-path) Direct shear
tests.
In situ investigation and testing. Trial pits.
Drillings. Boreholes logging. Sampling. Standard
Penetration Test (SPT). Cone penetration test
(CPT and CPTU). Shear Vane tests. Vane. Plate
loading tests (PLT). Measurement of pore pressure.

boreholes: Lefranc and Lugeon tests. Pumping tests.
Geotechnical Monitoring Monitoring of buildings
and earthen structures. Settlement and damage
patterns. Level surveys. Clinometers. Inclinometers.
