Aims :
It
is a basic course to give the fundamentals of
soil mechanics for the solution of the most common
problems in geotechnical engineering
Topics :
Soil general properties: (1,5 CFU)
Physical properties of soil particles. Description,
identification and classification of soils. Definition
of stresses: effective stress principle; geostatic
stress. Soil strains. Groundwater: capillarity,
groundwater flow: stationary and transient flow;
hints on soil consolidation theory.
Soil mechanics: (1,5 CFU) Basic equipments for
soil mechanical testing (oedometer, triaxial cell,
direct shear box). Compressibility and strength
of granular and cohesive soils from soil laboratory
testing.
Geotechnical engineering: (1,0 CFU) Earth thrusts
and stability of gravity walls; stability and
settlements of spread foundations; construction
and design of a single pile.
Practical work: (2 CFU) 8 to 10 numerical examples
on simple problems of geotechnical engineering
Textbooks :
Lecture notes from G. CALABRESI
available at the Faculty Copy Centre.
Exam :
a 3-hours written paper plus an
oral examination
Tutorial Session :
