Aims :
To
give at the students an exhaustive picture on
the materials deterioration. To show the most
common deterioration forms indicating which are
the suitable choices for the protection and durability
extension. Furthermore, the students have to be
able to select the suitable protection strategies
Topics :
Deterioration processes of the materials
with particular reference to metallic materials.
Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. Chemical, physical
and mechanical interactions of the materials with
the environment.
Techniques for corrosion prevention and protection.
Superficial pretreatments. Organic and inorganic
superficial coatings: painting, galvanizing, enamelling,
etc.
Criterions of materials selection.
Cathodic protection of the structures.
Recovery/restoration techniques of corroded materials.
Constructive strategies to extent the structure
and manufactured articles durability.
The course consists of theoretical lectures, practical
lectures using photographic support and material
samples which were subjected to corrosion phenomena.
Practical laboratory exercises are planned.

Exam :
The oral examination concerns the
topics treated during the lectures. The student
has to be able to explain the origin of the deterioration
cases and the prevention strategies.
