Aims :
The aim of the course is the presentation of to
class of new materials entered recently in the
phase of industrial production and used in medical
field is directly for the realization endo and
eso-prothesis and of artificial organs.
Topics :
Materials structures and related
properties. Covalent, ionic, molecular and metallic
solids. Mechanical behaviour. Comparison among
the three classes of materials. Chemical-physical
characterization. Definition of biomaterial and
biocompatibility. Classification of the medical
device and related normative. Classification of
the biomaterials. Metals and alloys. Re-absorbible
and not surface active ceramics. Thermoplastic
and thermosetting polymers. Composite materials.
Clinical employment of the biomaterials: orthopedics,
vascular, dental, surgery, plastic and maxillo-facial
surgery. Special applications in oftalmology.
Release of advanced drugs. Technology of the biomaterials
and use in the biomedical engineering: technologies
of properties change of the surfaces of the materials.
Tissues engineering. Solid free form fabbrication
in tissue applications.
