Aims :

 

Formative Objective:
The course aims to provide the basic notions regarding:
• the knowledge of the traditional constructive techniques as far is concerned both the structures (vertical and horizontal structures) and the fittings.
• the historical evolution of the concept of restoration.

 

Topics :

 

1. history of the constructive techniques: from the trilithic system of the prehistoric constructions untill the architecture of the '900. The evolution of the building skeletons: systems and pushing covers systems


2. The traditional constructive techniques - vertical and horizontal structures:
• Stone, tiled, mixed; masonries, arcs, vaults, domes; wooden floors and coverings; staircases; mechanics of the masonries; signals of the decay and disarrangements - mechanisms of collapse of the masonries; the damp in the masonries


3. The traditional fittings: constructive techniques, mentions of the degrade and disarrangements
• The building facades: the gravel hangings and adorns and in tile; cornices and roof eaves; the plasters; the window and door frames.
• Woodden armoured vaults, reed and chalk – hints on the degrade and disarrangements; plastered friezes, frames, mouldings, paintings, marble, etc.; floors; the frames.


4. Evolution of the concept of restoration.
• Historical evolution of the concept of restoration
• The charts of the restoration: from the Chart of Athens 1931 to the ICOMOS Document 1991
• The definitions of the rehabilitation and restoration: the evolution of the normative set – “adaptation“ and “improvement”; formulation and evaluation of the interventions according to the criterions of the architectural restoration according to the "Code of Practice".

Exam :

 

Written and oral test about the subject:
• The description and rough graphical representation of characteristic constructive elements of the historical and pre-modern buildings.
• The description of the principal phases of the historical evolution of the restoration concept and of the contents of the Restoration Charts.

 

Tutorial Session :

 

Audience of the students every two weeks and eventually upon request.
