Aims :
The instructive target of the course
is to supply technical engineering knowledge in
the field of building materials, either traditional
or innovative, and related technologies for their
use, directed to their optimal utilization in
building practice, from both the planning and
the construction point of view.
Topics :
Building materials: an outline of
production technologies of solids. Engineering
materials: criteria for selection and use of materials
for engineering applications. History and development
of building materials. Development of new materials.
Stone materials. Earth as a building material.
Ceramic materials. Bricks for building. Wood as
a building material. Air-setting and hydraulic
binders. Cement: historical development, production,
composition and properties of Portland cement.
Cement hydration, setting and hardening, strength
development of Portland cement. Special cements.
Fresh concrete. Self-compacting concrete. Concrete
mixture proportions as a function of mechanical
performance and durability. Aggregates in mortar
and concrete. Properties of hardened concrete.
Elastic properties of concrete. Durability and
deterioration mechanisms of building materials,
the opportunity of recovering. Steel as a building
material. Metal alloys in relation to their use
in buildings. Plastics in buildings. Composite
materials. Ancillary materials.
