Course: Industrial Production Engineering

italian version

Aims :

To study the principal characteristics and differences of the three types of materials: metals, polymers and ceramics. To study the correlation between the mechanical properties of the materials and their microstructure. To know the tests for the mechanical characterization of the mechanical properties of the materials.

Topics :

The solid state: crystalline structures and identification of crystalline and non crystalline solids with reference to metallic and polymeric materials. Reticular, point and line defects. Brief notes on atomic diffusion in the solids.
Phase diagrams: fundamental definitions and theory. Fe-C diagram: phase transformations; phase type and phase quantity; microstructure and microstructural analysis of the most common ferrous alloys. Phase diagrams of the most common metallic alloys. Mechanical properties of the metallic materials: elastic and plastic deformation; stress and deformation in metals; stress/strain curves; ductility, brittleness, resilience and hardness fundamental principles. Most common classes of metallic materials (carbon steels, stainless steel, aluminium and copper alloys), their classification, use and properties.
Polymers, basic knowledge. Functional groups identification, main polymerization techniques with reference to the most common technological and commercial materials. Average molecular weight, average degree of polymerization and glass transition. Distinction between amorphous and crystalline materials. Mechanical properties of the polymers with particular reference to the tensile test.
Notes on ceramics and their mechanical properties. Classification of the traditional and innovative ceramics and their crystalline structure. Silicates structure and fundamental concepts on clay and clay minerals. Mechanical properties: bending test in relationship to the tensile strength. Brief notes on the silica glasses.
Materials deterioration . Introduction to the corrosion of metals: theoretical and practical nobility of metals; Pourbaix diagrams; active-passive behaviour of metals; notes on typical forms of corrosion.
Practical laboratory exercises on the metallographic characterization of metals and characterization of selected metals and polymers by means of tensile test are planned.
