Aims :
The
aim of the course is to give students an exhaustive
knowledge on the materials used in ancient and
modern buildings and of their typical damages
and to give students a good ability to choose
the proper material and the most suitable path
for restoration.
Topics :
Structure and properties of concrete:
mix design, properties at early and later ages;
causes of concrete deterioration.
Steel and other non ferrous metal used in buildings;
corrosion in natural environments, in concrete
and protection methods.
Modern and ancient masonry: role of water as deterioration
agent of mortars and bricks.
Cement based restoration products (shrinkage reduced
mortars, macroporous plasters, paints) and polymeric
based products (epoxy, acrylic and polyurethane
resins)
Timber structure and factors affecting the durability
of timber; treatments of maintenance and/or restoration.
FRP (Fiber reinforced polymer) as tissue form
or pultruded materials for structures reinforcement.
