Course: Thermo-Mechanical Engineering

italian version

Aims :

The course will provide essential and detailed theoretical and practical knowledge for the study of engineering problems through the use of advanced measurement instruments, particularly without contact; “hands on” experience in the lab.

Topics :

Signal analysis: Fourier transform and series, spectrum analyser. Optical sensors: He-Neon laser, Nd-Yag laser, photodiodes and fiber-optic sensors, lens. Displacement, velocity and acceleration measurements: laser interferometry and vibrometry. Vibrations measurements: monitoring and diagnostics standards. Vibrations insulation. Examples of applications. Pressure measurements: static and dynamic fields, dynamic calibration and applications. Gross volume flow rate measurements: rotameters, vortex, magnetic and ultrasonic flowmeters, calibration, non-intrusive measurements systems. Local flow velocity measurements: Pitot tube, hot-wire anemometer, laser doppler velocimeter LDA and 2D/3D PIV. Examples of applications. Temperature measurements: radiation fundamentals, optical pyrometers, infrared imaging system, measuring problems in flowing fluids and examples of application. Sound measurements: acoustical holography and intensimetry and applications. Nano-micro systems: measurement and applications.

Exam :

The course is developed in theoretical lessons and exercises in the lab.
The student has to carry out an experimental work concerning one of the course subjects.
The writing of reports concerning the exercises developed in the lab will be considered favourable.
The examination consists in an oral discussion of the experimental work, of the exercises and subjects of the course.

Tutorial Session :

After the end of the lesson.
