Aims :

 

Learning the main concepts concerning the following subjects: basic of quantum mechanics; atomic and molecular and condensed matter properties; electronic and optical properties of solids; light-matter interaction and physical properties of laser.

 

Topics :

 

Basic of quantum mechanics: wave functions, Schroedinger’s equation, observables and operators, model of the atom. The hydrogen atom and the periodic table of elements. Bonding energy and condensed states. Molecular interaction, liquids, solids and liquid crystals. Crystallographic structures.
Electronic properties of solids. Free electrons in metals. Effective mass. Energy bands. Semiconductors. Semiconductor devices. Optical properties of dolids. Light-matter interaction. Light amplification and laser emission. Theory of laser oscillation. Semiconductor laser.
