Aims :
This course is a short course on slope stability
problems in soils; the safety of natural slopes
both in static and seismic conditions is addressed.
Basic notions of soil mechanics and geotechnical
engineering are required.
Topics :
Lectures – Basic soil mechanics:
Soil investigation, in situ testing and monitoring.
Soil geotechnical properties: shear strength,
total and effective, peak, critical and residual
strengths. Instability processes: classifications,
definition of the geotechnical model, slope stability
analyses. Slope stabilization: structural remedials,
drainage.
Practical work: Hands on analysis of a slope stability
problem .
Textbooks :
Lecture notes.
Exam :
Presentation of a written report
on the practical work of the year and an oral
discussion.
