Aims :
The
course develops general topics about masonry and
timber structures. Principal objective is a general
forming of students about the design of common
RC and steel structures.
Topics :
Timber structures: Types of wood
products. Beam design: moment capacity, shear
capacity, bearing capacity. Combined bending and
axial force. Fastener and connection design. Curved
beams and arches. Trusses. Serviceability considerations.
Masonry structures: Types of masonry products.
Un-reinforced and reinforced masonry. Italian
and EC6 codes. Calculus of compressive masonry
walls and walls subjected both to compression
and shear. Stability of walls. Design of principal
masonry elements of a masonry building.
