Aims :
This
course is dedicated to the design of earth retaining
structures. A basic knowledge of soil mechanics
and geotechnical engineering subjects is required.
Topics :
Lectures: Basic
soil mechanics: Soil geotechnical properties in
the design of earth retaining structures. Earth
pressure theories, both in static and seismic
conditions. Soil structure interaction models.
Earth walls, diaphragm walls, sheet piles. Reinforced
earth. Anchors.
Practical work: design examples
of flexible earth retaining structures and of
their anchors, by using professional software
made available to the students.

Presentation of a written report
on the practical work of the year and an oral
discussion
