Aims :
The
fundamentals of physical metallurgy will be illustrated
to relate the mechanical properties, microstructure,
composition and heat treatments of metals.
Topics :
Principles of physical metallurgy:
crystal structure, defects in metals; point, line
and surface defects. Deformation in crystals;
slip systems, dislocations and their role in plastic
strain. Deformation in metals; method for increasing
strength. Fatigue in metals, generation and propagation
of fatigue cracks; methods for increasing fatigue
strength.
