Aims :

The course is intended to give basic preparation in foundation engineering, in order to assure stability and serviceability of the structures to be built.

Topics :

Factors determining type of foundation:( steps in choosing type of foundation; bearing capacity and settlement, design loads). Use of in situ testing to predict the behaviour of shallow and deep foundations. Bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations on clay and plastic silt. Bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations on sand and non plastic silt.
Use of piles. Pile capacity to axial loads. Pile spacing and group action. Test piles. Settlement analysis.of pile foundation. Uplif. Negative skin friction. Lateral load.
