Aims :

 

To provide basic knowledge on the fundamental mechanisms underlying the functions of the organism.

 

Topics :

 

Setting the scene: aims, methods and limits of physiology.
The physiology of excitable cells: membrane potential, Nernst equation, action potential and electrotonic potentials. The physiology of intercellular communication. Muscle physiology.
The motor system: ierarchical organization, spinal cord, brainstem, cerebellum, basal ganglia and motor cortex.
Physiology od the cardiocascular sustem. Functional anatomy of the heart and blood vessels. The electrical and mechanical events of the heart. Peripheral circulation and hemodynamics.
Whole body metabolism and energetics. The metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. The endocrine control of body metabolism.
Regulation and adaptation: historical overview and relevance in physiology, pathophysiology and modelling.
