Aims :
The
aim of this module is to provide the student basic
tools for understanding thermodynamic proc-esses
and heat transfer mechanisms, with particular
focus on industrial engineering applications.
Topics :
Introduction to thermodynamics.
Basics of thermometry. State thermodynamics. Thermo-dynamics
sharts. Vapours, ideal gas, incompressible substances.
First law of thermodynamics for closed and open
systems. Application of first law to simple system
components. Second law of thermodynamics. Clausius
and Kelvin postulates. Direct and reverse thermodynamic
cycles. Direct and reverse Carnot cycle. Entropy.
Vapour and gas direct thermodynamic cycles. Vapour
compression reverse thermodynamic cycle. Heat
transfer mechanisms. Steady state conduction.
Electric analgy and resistive model. Thermal convection.
Flow regimes. A-dimensional numbers and correlations
for practical use. Thermal radiation. Black-body
and real-surfaces radiation. Heat transfer between
black bodies, gray bodies within cavities. Heat
transfer combined mechanisms. Walls transmittance.
Enhanced heat transfer. Finned surfa-ces. Heat
exchangers. Thermal conduction in dynamic state
within negligible-internal-resistance systems.
