Course: Civil Engineering

italian version

Aims :

The course is focused on the geometric design of roads and on the materials employed in their construction.

Topics :

Basic concepts on the horizontal and vertical alignment of roads. Road sections and road capacity. Overview of the Italian standards which deal with the functional and geometric characteristics of roads. Natural soil as construction material for road applications. Criteria for the classification of soils. Compressibility and compaction. Bearing capacity of subgrades: main experimental methods for evaluation. Aggregates: physical, chemical and mechanical properties. Properties of gains and unbound mixtures. Properties of aggregates for bituminous mixtures: main experimental methods. Bitumen. Chemical properties of bitumen. Conventional characterization of bitumen based on CEN standard test methods. Bituminous mixtures and flexible pavements. Mix design of bituminous mix-tures. Characterization of flexible pavements as multi-layered systems. Main experimental test methods. In situ tests. Rigid concrete pavements. Mains domains of application. Modelling and de-sign concepts. Evaluation of the moduli of pavement layers (back-analysis). Performance require-ments and technical specifications for road materials.
