Aims :


Basic knowledge for understanding how wings work and the calculation of air lift and drag.

 

Topics :

 

Basic notions. Wing profiles and relevant terminology. Air foils characteristics. Circulation Theorem of Kelvin and starting vortex. Vortical sheet. Lift of a thin symmetric airfoil.Short account of lift of arbitrary body: vortex panel method.
Uncompressible flow on a finite wing. The vortex filament: Biot-Savart law, Helmoltz theorem. Prandtl lifting line Theory. Wing plantform effects.
Boundary layer theory. Boundary layer Equations of Prandtl. Self-similar equations. Calculation of the drag of a thin layer. Integral methods. Von Karman Equation. Evaluation of integral method accuracy. Pholhausen solution method and its applications to a still clylinder in a uniform flow.
