Aims :
The aim of the course is to supply the students
with the basics of the conceptual design philosophy
regarding the determination of the static layouts
, the choice of the proper structural materials,
the sizing of structural members and the selection
of appropriate constructive techniques.
Topics :
Definition of design loads (dead
and live loads, seismic effects, wind load, thermal
variations, load combinations for SLS and ULS).
Analysis of elastic multi degrees of freedom systems
(method of equilibrium for the solution of the
elastic problems and use of computer procedures).
Method of partial coefficients for the evaluation
of structural safet.y
Reinforced concrete structures (structural performance,
bond and cracking, evaluation of serviceability
limit state and ultimate limit state, structural
layout and construction types).
Steel construction.
Foundations and retaining works (plinths, piles,
footings, slabs, retaining walls).
Innovative systems for the seismic protection
of buildings (energy approach, base isolation,
energy dissipation devices).
Design of simple structural members (stairways,
joists, cantilevers, footings).

test followed by an oral discussion about the
theoretical as well as practical aspects of the
course.
Tutorial Session :
Students will be received two hours
a week on a day to be determined.
