Aims :
The
goal of the course is to provide advanced knowledge
related to the structural analysis and design
of reinforced concrete structures and steel structures.
Topics :
Basics of dynamics of structures:
single degree of freedom systems; multi degree
of freedom systems; modal analysis.
Seismic actions: earthquakes and description of
the seismic action, elastic response spectra,
design spectra for ductile structures.
Seismic analysis: modal response spectrum analysis,
combination of seismic actions with other kind
of actions.
Design of reinforced concrete constructions in
seismic areas: conceptual design, dissipative
mechanisms, strength hierarchy, design of structural
elements (beams, columns, shear walls, foundations)
for structures with low and high ductility.
Design of steel structures in seismic areas: conceptual
design, moment resisting frames and braced frames
(concentric and eccentric bracings), dissipative
mechanisms, strength hierarchy, design of structural
elements (beams, columns, braces) for non-ductile
structures and structures with low and high ductility.
Strategies for the mitigation of seismic actions:
analysis of the behaviour of base-isolated systems
and structural systems equipped with dissipation
devices (viscous, elasto-plastic or rubber devices),
design of dissipative devices.
Prestressed structures: prestressing of statically
determinate structures and short accounts on the
prestressing of statically indeterminate structures;
equivalent static actions; short term and long
term prestressing losses; design and verification
of structural elements subjected to shear-bending.

Exam :
The assessment criteria of this
course relies on the outcomes of an oral exam
which mainly focuses on the evaluation of the
student understanding of the theoretical and design
aspects.
Tutorial Session :
The lecturer is available on Tuesday
from 3.00 to 5.00 p.m. at the Department of Architecture,
Construction and Structures – Area Structures.
